Day 24 of 62

This day we proceeded deeper into Virginia, following the southern border with North Carolina. Crawling up and over the mountains on small single lane roads was fairly exhausting, but once we succeeded, the state began to open up and differentiate itself from Kentucky. The roads straightened but maintained a sine wave rise and fall across gently rolling hills. The trees lining the roads were tall and straight, with little underbrush. I had the impression of an area that had been settled and groomed for a really long time, compared even with Kentucky and Arkansas where the landscape was so thick as to make walking through the woods seem impossible.

We settled in at the John Kerr Dam and Reservoir, another Army Corp of Engineers site. This site seems more agreeable than Cumberland Gap, with a little more open space around the each campsite and reasonably clean facilities. And the fireflies seem back to a more seemly one-second flash every seven seconds. I can only imagine the readers’ relief at this information.

One has landed on my PowerBook display, even as I’m typing this. Sadly, it seems to have no interest in following the cursor.
