Day 42 of 62

When we woke up, we faced the same gray drizzle that had blanketed the skies the previous days. Is Maine always like that? Oh well, nothing to do but head out and see what there was to see, regardless. And for much of the drive, all we could see were the edges of the road. We headed to Acadia National Park, on an island right on the Maine coastline. The drizzle stopped enough that we wanted to get out and walk a bit, so we stopped on one of the trails in the park and hiked up to a site named “Bubble Rock”. The granite boulders were striking, but they made for a fairly slick surface to climb and hike on. And, once we got to the summit, we were completely enveloped in a cloud, so there simply wasn’t any view of the ocean or Jordan Pond available; all we saw was a solid wall of gray.Gray skies, smilin' at me...

For lunch we headed into Bar Harbor (or as the Mainiacs call it, “Bah Hahbah”) and enjoyed about fifteen minutes of mild sun and furtive peeks of blue sky. After we wandered the touristy shops, we headed back into the park just in time for the sun to retreat and for the cloud banks to lower around us again. When we could get as close as fifteen feet from the ocean we could see a bit of water, but otherwise the scenery was fairly inaccessible. Lousy fog.

We finally headed back to Bangor for the night, to rest up before beginning to head *gasp* west.
