On the fourth day, we left Arkansas and returned to southeastern Missouri. We continued to avoid the interstate but found a town where we could get the oil changed (somewhat overdue) while we ate lunch. Based on the reports of other travellers we decided to go through southern KY instead of northern TN on our way to VA. We continued through small towns and finally across the Mississippi into Kentucky, where we entered the “Land Between the Lakes” area to find camping. So far Kentucky is mostly just like Missouri, farming communities with an excess of religious billboards. I don’t think there’s much risk of my settling here, but we enjoyed the scenery, and very much enjoyed the 7-CD biography of Mark Twain we borrowed from Allen (once again, thanks, Allen). We settled for the night just below Energy Dam, on Lake Barkley (the eastern side of the LBL) and slowly cooled off and had dinner. It’s great to be camping again and even though we used the computer and the phone this evening, we’re not at all sorry to be further from “civilization”. The doors of the camper were all open and fireflies spun around my head as I typed. Time for a humid camp fire and perhaps a game of cards before turning in for the night.
