I could not convince myself to indulge in Boone&#8217;s Farm Blue Hawaiian&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/YKWsouFCEc1w1gZpUZiYAw?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SZ2Lo-qJMrI\/AAAAAAAABpM\/JC3MOL0FV-E\/s800\/Boones%20Farm%20Blue%20Hawaiian.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; but we did buy all sorts of tropical fruit. We got rambutan, which is a relative of the lychee, but looks like an overgrown strawberry with curled spikes &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/_5qaiACcQ5OuEwSKV2d58g?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SZ2LiKGZFpI\/AAAAAAAABpI\/MNv5l01_yzw\/s800\/rambutan.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and these cute fingerling bananas which I&#8217;ve grown very fond of. This may be the first non-Cavendish banana I&#8217;ve ever had, aside from an occasional plantain. They have a delicate taste, but the sweetness has a slightly sharper edge, almost a hint of citrus. I wonder if I can find these in Portland?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/qKopNHcVcsjWHIfk9EiG3w?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaBETF0HnmI\/AAAAAAAABpQ\/BYzNJz0Vy1k\/s800\/not%20cavendish.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is Magic Sands Beach, a tiny little spot in Kona, but the first opportunity we had to plunge into the Pacific on this trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/bIfhCEVsJF_7Bgk3YBRMew?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmUlDHKiI\/AAAAAAAABps\/e1ZWV7i3_vA\/s800\/magic%20sands%20beach.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One night we did a tour in a glass-bottomed boat, where I caught a brief shot of a manta ray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/1nFKu8bZPGnfpVC1ZP0wlA?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmU07ldqI\/AAAAAAAABpw\/vuMrO67_rmY\/s800\/manta.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next day we hiked the Kilauea Crater. The hike starts up on a 400-foot rim surrounding the crater, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/MF7vn_t_XKbQqJQrQ47hAg?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmVnS31RI\/AAAAAAAABp0\/o6ubXw5Krh0\/s800\/caldera%20from%20above.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and then descends to the floor of the caldera. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/KRUcGYeYLGQUIPzmdULS7Q?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmV4oy1OI\/AAAAAAAABp4\/E6KeIpfZW9A\/s800\/caldera%20floor.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ferns growing on the crater rim hike are amazingly lush and large.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/iN3_LZ6eC94EfxiALHwDTg?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmWbrWMiI\/AAAAAAAABp8\/5As0U9xDX4Q\/s800\/coiled%20ferns.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the drive back towards Kona, we stumbled upon a tiny, rustic, rural graveyard dug from a lava-riddled hillside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/d_JwJuM59OHdpM4jnmkFkg?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmW2J6DnI\/AAAAAAAABqA\/wARQXa0iMbw\/s800\/graveyard.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/2idgy0l6zeyPheMQIyqAtQ?feat=embedwebsite\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_4WfajfRCVok\/SaDmXeWlnoI\/AAAAAAAABqE\/G_SUTYMWxbk\/s800\/shattered%20headstone.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, we catch a shuttle to Kauai.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As soon as we arrived, we hit a local market for provisions.
